«The first after God»! It’s an immense effort and enormous responsibility to be the captain of nuclear submarine as well as to be the captain of a simple old vessel that is permeated with smell of fish and algae. The first after god for us in this expedition is the captain “G.U. Vereshagin” – Roman Bituskiy. Today he celebrates his 30th anniversary. The Class@Baikal team and the crew congratulates him and wish all the very best.
Krasny Yar is a cape between the Peschanaya lagoon and the river Buguldejka. There are outcrops of red color that can be seen from the middle of Baikal Lake. One of the research area of our expedition is located in front of this cape and, in accordance with traditions, is also called “Area Krasny Yar”.
Красный Яр – мыс на переходе бухта Песчаная – речка Бугульдейка. Здесь обнажаются породы красного цвета, эти обнажения заметны с середины Байкала. Один из районов наших исследований находится напротив этого мыса и, согласно заведенным традициям, тоже называется «район Красный Яр.
The 2nd International Class@Baikal Expedition officially started on 8th of July.
8 июля 2015 года официально стартовала Вторая Международная экспедиция Class@Baikal.
Today there was the change of participants of the expedition. Geologists, sedimentologists and biologists were changed by team of geophysicists headed by Michael Tokarev, Senior Researcher from the Department of Seismometry and Geoacoustics of the Faculty of Geology of the Moscow State University, Director of the Centre of Seismic Data Analysis.
The participants of the first part of the expedition said “good-bye” to the ship crew and to the Lake Baikal, made a walk in Listvyanka-village, with noise of Sunday and with all-days typical smoked omul’s smell.
There come the final day of the first stage of our expedition Class@Baikal.
Mixed feelings filled our team since morning. From the one hand everybody tired after week full of work and we look forward to approaching break and rest. From the other hand, despite accumulated weariness, it was sad to think that soon we will have to say “Goodbye” to some participants of the expedition.
Rain was going all the night, singing us lullabies with drops knocking at the decks and shipboards. In the morning the overcast changed by cumulus. Sun broke through the clouds and designed coastal cliffs of Tageran steppes with fantastic tracery. Picturesque landscapes of the Ol’khon Gates caused joy to all members of our expedition all day long.
As storm with the north-west wind was again forecasted for today’s morning, we decided to work on a short distance from our overnight stop place (protected from a storm). It is almost in front of the entrance into the strait Malye Ol’khonskie Vorota (Little Gates of Ol’khon).
